For my #SciComm project, I chose to recreate several of the tests that we performed in the lab in the game Minecraft. I chose to use Minecraft as my media source because it can be seen as a more approachable way to express difficult topics, such as our microbiology research from this semester. Video games can offer a less intimidating approach to science and also a creative outlet for many people who do not consider themselves to be creative, including me. Minecraft seemed like a perfect outlet for this project because there are endless possibilities and creativity in the game. The reason I chose to recreate several of the tests we did in the lab is because I wanted to show some of the results from my work. I chose to recreate the streak plates because I thought it would be interesting to create giant petri dishes and use different types of blocks for different isolates. I also recreated the catalase test in which I was able to use special blocks in the game in order to create bubbles, showing my positive results. My favorite test that I recreated in Minecraft was the BCP glucose test. This test was the most fun to build because I was able to create a giant test tube rack and use different colored blocks for different results.
